খড় মুখ নিয়ে এক শালিখ যেতেছে উড়ে চুপে;
গোরুর গাড়িটী যায় মেঠো পথ বেয়ে ধীরে-ধীরে;
আঙিনা ভরিয়া আছে সোনালি খড়ের ঘন স্তূপে;

পৃথিবীর সব ঘুঘু ডাকিতেছে হিজলের বনে;
পৃথিবীর সব রূপ লেগে আছে ঘাসে;
পৃথিবীর সব প্রেম আমাদের দু'জনার মনে;

Translation

An evening in Bengal.

Dusk descends, spreads serene silence.
A myna fowl flies with straw in her beak in silence.
A cattle car traverses lanes of fields very slowly.
Golden straws fills the courtyard in heaps.

All pigeons & doves of the world are now calling from mangrove forests.
All the beauty of the world is now reflected from the grasses.
All the love of the world now descends in our senses.
The sky disperses peacefully into horizons of vast skies.

Hindu Musalmaan-The Poem & Translation

Translation

In pious India, the auspicious propitious pilgrim place;
The sounds of temple bells mingle with Namaz's echoes.

Here the daily Hindu prayer starts with early morning Islamic address.
The echoes of the Islamic priest ring in skies and galaxies

An Islamic saint counts rosaries in mosque, a priest recites hymns.
The echoes of the holy Vedas diffuse with tones of the holy Quran

Sanyasi & Peer, mingle here together.
Maszid and Mandir merges here.

Who says that only Hindus are spread in India everywhere
Here a Hindu lady ties Rakhi on wrist of her Muslim brother.

More than Arab, Egypt, Turkey, Iran and the middle east
More Muslims reside in India spread all over its breast.

The twain

Translation

You didn't look for me for many days
I too didn't for some days
Look for you.
Living under the same galaxy, same light falls on us.

We both co-exist;
Signs of Earth's orbits fade away
Love too fades away;
Stars too have to die some day

Is it?
He exclaimed as he looked into eyes of his partner
Today this is the lesson the Sun imparts to the early & winter months; his partners.

To another lover

---জীবনানন্দ দাশ

মাছরাঙা চ'লে গেছে -- আজ নয় কবেকার কথা;
দিতে চেয়ে মানুষের অবহেলা উপেক্ষায় হ'য়ে গেছে ক্ষয়;
প্রকৃতির অনির্বচনীয় সব চিহ্ন থেকে দু' চোখ ফিরিয়ে;

মাছরাঙা চ'লে গেছে -- আজ নয় কবেকার কথা;
কাজ করে কথা ব'লে চিন্তা করে চলেছে মানব;

Translation

Halcyon flew away-not today but long time ago
Since then the bright sketches return incessantly.
They decayed due to negligence and contempt of man
Felt pain yet the heart of man;
Ignoring all ineffable signs of nature
Considered brain and devoted all efforts to fulfill desires.

Halcyon flew away-not today but long time ago
Since then brightness of wings and feathers decay
And then they become extinct.
Are Kingfishers not bright as men ?
Execute work and then boast, men think n...
Though they immerse the best ideas of the day in ocean;
Then do these ideas convey anything but silence ?

Echoes in dreams- The Poem & Translation

ন্বপ্নের ধ্বনিরা এসে বলে যায় : স্থবিরতা সব চেয়ে ভালো;
প্রদীপ নিভায়ে রব বিছানায় শুয়ে;

Translation

Stillness is the best; in dreams whisper some voices
In some quiescent winter night lighting a lamp
Or putting it out lying on a bed
As if twilight pile up in those still eyes.
This light eternally standstill.
Renouncing all someday I too shall be still.
Then on that winter night I'll keep aside my work of embroidery
I'll light off my lamp lying on bed
Leaning in the darkness of night still & awake
Alike a bat's snaky way

Stillness, tell me, when will you come my way.

An Old Poem - Poem & Translation -

Translation

We all awake in direction of death
Hordes of shadows all over, at random.
Which blow away with winds of winnows
Realizes- attains mortal body made up of atoms.

One or two faces among these hazy chaperons
Though I've never seen-yet among gusts,
Return firstly as Gargi* then as Janki* one by one.
And finally attain the form of Banalata Sen and resurrects.

At Long Last - অবশেষে

বাঘের ঘ্রাণের মতো হৃদয়ে জাগায়ে যায় ত্রাস;
একজোটে কাজ করে মানুষেরা যে রকম ভোটের ব্যালটে;

Translation

Tall trees play in peaceful mind here
As mid-day sun's warmth touches the green leaves
Once they are reminded of cold dawns on earth in river.
Again in afternoons they remain patient as mammoth deers
All these trees;__ as if from afar some hazy air
Raises terror in heart alike scent of a tiger.
Look around - their blueish fusion
Shivers in terror; __ in heart of faint blue horizon.
They may jump alike a speedy deer
In horizons they may also disappear.
Alike men who in ballots of votes work together
Yet as a tigress they embrace the airs.
Among oceanic sands and nocturnal stars.

সেখানে ছিলাম আমি ; আরও দূর অন্ধকারে বিদর্ভ নগরে ;

সন্ধ্যা আসে ; ডানার রৌদ্রের গন্ধ মুছে ফেলে চিল ;
তখন গল্পের তরে জোনাকির রঙে ঝিলমিল ;
সব পাখি ঘরে আসে - সব নদী - ফুরায় এ জীবনের সব লেনদেন ;

Translation

Since thousands of years wandering on earth's shore
Spanning seas of Ceylon to oceans of Malay in dark hour
Traveled far & wide in misty world of Asoka & Bimbisara
There was I, deeply embedded among darkness of Vidarbha Nagore.
A tired soul that I am, enclaved in the ocean foams of vigor;
I was offered few moments of peace by Banalata Sen of Natore.

Her black hairs echoed the darkness of Vidisha
Her silhouette, Sravasti's bold altorilievo; in seas far away,
Alike the mariner who broke his rudder and lost his way,
And in cinnamon islands he spotted a patch of green grass,
Thus, I saw her, in my gloomy moments,
" Lifting her bird-nest like eyes.
Where were you" she asked;the Banalata Sen of Natore.

Alike cries of dewdrops at the end of the day
Alike the kite who erases the Sun's essence with its wings and dusk descends
As the colors of the world are erased, the manuscripts indulge in observance
Then in guise of history, alike twinkling colorful fireflies,
All birds return to their nests, so do rivers, stops all the life's bargain.
What prevails perennially is darkness, me sitting face to face with Banalata Sen
